UPDATED JULY 11

University Avenue closed through 9th Street Intersection

City crews will close the portion of University Avenue between 11th street and 9th street, including the intersection of 9th street, on Tuesday, July 12th as work continues to replace a sewer main. 5th Street to Van Buren and South Lamar to Jackson Avenue will be detour routes.

UPDATED JULY 1st

There will be multiple lane closures associated with road work beginning on Tuesday, July 5th. Crews will be paving St. Andrews and St. Andrews Circle Tuesday. Milling will begin on Davis Drive on Tuesday as well and paving will begin as soon as the paving is completed on St. Andrews.

University Avenue will be closed beginning Tuesday July 5th from 8 AM – 3 PM as City crews continue work to replace a sewer main. Detours will remain in place for University Avenue between South Lamar and 9th Street for the week.

UPDATED JUNE 27th

University Day Time Closures—June 28th – July 1st

City crews will be closing a portion of University Avenue from 8 AM until 3 PM each day this week beginning on Tuesday, June 28th. Crews will be replacing a sewer main between 11th Street and 9th Street. Use South Lamar to East Jackson or 9th Street to Van Buren as detours. Please use caution in this area.

UPDATED JUNE 24th

Paving crews will begin paving Washington on Monday, June 27th before moving to 11th street. Paving is expected on Elm and Hickory on Tuesday, June 28th. Milling crews will begin work on St. Andrews on Tuesday, June 28th and are expected on Davis Drive by Thursday, June 30th. Expect some delays in these areas and allow for extra travel time. We would like to offer the following tips to motorists and pedestrians in these areas:

Tips for driving in the work zone:

• Drivers need to be extremely alert and cautious until this work is complete. There will be a lot of large equipment and there will be limited sight distance in some areas. Don’t assume that a vehicle, piece of equipment or truck sees you.
• Obey all signs and directions provided by the flagman on site. Do not attempt to drive around a flagman until you are directed to do so.
• Please drive slowly for your safety and for that of the people working.
• The milled surface will be rough and may contain loose rocks. Keep a safe distance between yourself and vehicles in front of you.
• Drivers are discouraged from driving in the black liquid “tar” that is sprayed in lines on the roadway until it has been covered with asphalt. This material is very sticky and messy. If you must cross it, drive slowly for some distance afterwards. Driving fast will cause the “tar” to spin off of your tires and onto your vehicle—much like driving through a mud-puddle slings mud all over the back of your car.
• Drivers will be able to drive on the new asphalt soon after it is placed. It is preferred that vehicles stay off of the new pavement until it has been rolled down with the large rollers that follow behind the paver. There is usually only a few minutes delay between the two operations.

Special consideration for pedestrians/children/pets:

• The fresh asphalt surface will remain extremely hot for several hours after it is placed. Do not attempt to walk on it with bare feet or loose shoes that may come off of your feet. Keep pets off of the fresh asphalt until it has cooled to avoid burns to the pads of the their paws.
