A Welcome Message From Mayor Richard Howorth

Oxford, Mississippi is a dynamic community, a small town where students and active retirees alike may avail themselves of any number of services and amenities each and every day. The city, whose hub is the historic town square, surrounded by shops and restaurants, is well known for its culture and small town character.

The surrounding area has abundant natural resources that include Holly Springs National Forest, Sardis Lake, and a gentle, green countryside. With a crime rate that is half the national average, outstanding public schools, excellent health care, and a top-flight public university, Oxford’s exceptional quality of life has become widely recognized.

This recognition has created a dramatic rate of growth – ten percent in 2004. Unanticipated building and development has followed, leading to sprawl, traffic congestion, infrastructure stress, and related issues with which the community has had little previous experience.

Citizens old and new are united in the effort to preserve Oxford’s character and permit new development. The city recently passed a new comprehensive plan and is currently undergoing an annexation study. A public transit feasibility study and community pathway project are underway. The good, hard-working, people of Oxford will continue to collaborate to keep their community great – just as they always have.
