March, 2008 - American Red Cross Month

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, for more than a century, the American Red Cross has been at the forefront of helping Americans prevent, prepare for and respond to large and small disasters. Families and communities depend on the Red Cross in times of need, and

Whereas, each year during the month of March, we formally recognize the American Red Cross and its essential humanitarian role in our community. We honor the contributions of the North Central Mississippi Service Center of the American Red Cross in making Oxford, Mississippi and surrounding communities a better place, and

Whereas, the citizens of Oxford, Mississippi and surrounding communities have made contributions of time and money to help fund the operations of the local unit of the American Red Cross, and

Whereas, the local unit of the American Red Cross last year issued 3,757 certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, and Aquatic Health and Safety courses, and assisted 268 individuals with temporary food, clothing, and housing assistance in over 71 fires and other natural disasters in 2007 in this area, and helped facilitate 125 emergency messages between active duty military personnel and their families last year, and held disaster training sessions in this area for 93 persons and reached another 995 through health fairs and informational displays, and

Whereas,
the local Red Cross took a lead role in the initial response to the recent Lafayette County tornadoes providing assistance to over 100 victims affected by the storms, and

Whereas, Red Cross volunteers are the core of the organization, donating their time and energy to selflessly serve those in need and demonstrating the compassion and generosity for which Americans are known, and

Whereas, the North Central Mississippi service center of the American Red Cross and its nearly 200 volunteers and donors provide valuable tools and education to individuals, families, workplaces and schools, making us all stronger and more resilient.

Therefore, let it be proclaimed that on behalf of the City of Oxford, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen do hereby recognize March 2008 as

American Red Cross Month

congratulating all staff and volunteers and thanking them for their worthy service to the City of Oxford.
